Meet Ron Robinson, Founder of BeautyStat Cosmetics

We rarely get on any beauty bandwagon without a ton of research and skepticism. But when we heard about the BeautyStat Universal C Skin Refiner from BeautyStat Cosmetics, we were hooked by the crisp, direct messaging and the science behind their all-star formulation.

That simplicity in messaging and elegance of formula is courtesy of founder Ron Robinson (@ronrobinsoncosmetichemist), a veteran cosmetic chemist with over 20 years experience in creating innovative, big-selling beauty products for some of the most recognizable beauty brands.

Before starting BeautyStat Cosmetics, Ron had also created an influencer agency, BeautyStat. His brand is already a best-seller on QVC, and the multi-award winning Vitamin C serum has been named one of the best by Oprah Magazine, Allure, Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. Ron is also a resident beauty expert for Allure Magazine.

Q: Covid-19 has had an enormous impact on the beauty industry in many different ways, how did it impact BeautyStat Cosmetics? And what was your greatest learning?
A:
After having good sales in February 2020, sales significantly dipped in March and early April. We quickly adapted our message to show that our high-performance products also are great for self-care at home. Plus, we donated hundreds of products to front-line health care workers.

Q: What is unique about your Universal C formula versus similar high percentage Vitamin C formulas from other brands?
A: We use one of the highest levels of pure Vitamin C available in an over-the-counter cosmetic product (20% pure L-Ascorbic Acid), and have three patents on the ability to encapsulate it so that it does not degrade or oxidize (many competitors turn orange brown due to oxidation). We are the only company that has this technology given the exclusive patents.

We compared our formula with leading competitor Vitamin C products to see how they stack up (and we have the receipts to prove it!). See video comparison here.

We also combined our 20% pure Vitamin C with EGCG (the most active component in Green Tea). This combo helped us get significant results in an independent clinical study.

Texture!! Other Vitamin C serums can be sticky/tacky or oily, ours is silky and velvety and absorbs quickly leaving a natural finish. Consumers are telling us that their pores look smaller after the first application….and they are ditching their makeup primers because of the texture.

Q: Why did you choose 20% Vitamin C for your Universal C formula? Is there a dose curve at which point the % does not play a part in efficacy and doesn't compromise safety?
A: Yes, we know that you need at least 10% L-Ascorbic Acid to get any benefits. We chose 20% as this is the level that maximizes performance while minimizing irritation.

Q: With so much negative marketing around silicones these days, why did you choose to use silicone as the backbone of your formula technology?
A: We researched this extensively before launch. Silicones are not only safe for the skin but also some are FDA approved for use as a skin protectant. Plus, silicones provide a very appealing texture that is unmatched.

Q: In your view, how will Covid-19 shape the beauty industry, in the long-term?
A: Consumers are now more than ever looking to self-care. This will become our way of life.

Q: What is the one beauty trend you hope will cease to exist in 2021? And the one you hope will flourish?
A: I hope the fear-mongering that some clean beauty brands perpetuate by demonizing ingredients (ex. silicones) will stop. And I hope the trend of wearing sunscreen and hydrating continues.

Q: What is the one piece of beauty advice you would like to give to our readers?
A: Don’t get caught up in the hot new ingredient trend. Focus on understanding what your own skincare concerns are and finding products that will work to address those needs. Look for brands that have clinical testing results too. And for chemists, look for ways to deliver better performing products.

Q: Can you tell us anything about your future plans in terms of BeautyStat Cosmetics or any other projects you may have in the pipeline?
A: We are working on innovations in the Cleansing and Sunscreen category. Stay tuned for that…
